Fandy Crosby wrote Blessed Assurance in 1873. Wow. The quote that really got me that I hadn't really been aware of in the past was that she said, you know, I didn't write these hymns in spite of my blindness. I really wrote them because of my blindness, because she said, if I hadn't been blind, I would have been distracted by too many other beautiful things in this world. But I think there's some truth there. 100%. Because we are so easily distracted by not bad things. Yeah. But things that just steal our time, steal our attention, you know. And she was a massive celebrity, if you will, in her time. And yet it was all a testimony pointed to Jesus. And that's the legacy she had.

Well, I was gonna say you're sitting across from what's left of Mary Beth and Chip after a week at kids' camp.

Yes. I'm still pretty tired. Still pretty tired. Yeah. I bet sleeping in your bed felt really good though. It did.

Yeah. Yeah. It was an upgrade for sure. Let's say Doc.

Yeah. Okay, so I got a question. If you could summarize camp in one word, what would it be?

SPEAKER_01 2:04

You know what? That is a great question. And I think I would say camp. Yeah. Period. Yeah. Like I I really I honestly I say that because Leanne and I were talking about this because she went as a counselor this year. And she has been like years ago when we were at Airline and Mayo, she went with us. And Centricid is Centricid. And that's actually what I love about that camp. Like I will say that Centricid is like the best camp experience in my mind, hands down.

Why? Because I'm I'm new because I don't know anything about Centricid.

They do a great job of making it really fun for kids, pretty structured for the kids, but with some flexibility and free time. Okay. They do a good job of making worship very pointed, where they share the gospel and talk about truth of scripture, but not where they are playing the 87th verse of a song. And if you really, really mean it, raise your hand. Because for kids, that's a that's a weird situation. Yeah. Centricid just has the camp model down to an art. And I think that's why it's it's funny. It's like hard to summarize camp in one word because like centricid is centricid. Okay. And it's great, it's it's consistent. They do a good job with it. And that's why we push kids to that camp. Yeah. Go with us. Like um technically, our kids' ministry runs from you know birth, but camp age starts when you go into the third grade through kids' side runs through fifth grade. You finish fifth grade. And then student ministry is you're in sixth grade through high school. Well, there's an overlap year in camp because our sixth graders are technically eligible to go to our student camp and our kids' camp. Okay. But we kind of made the decision maybe last year that we wanted all of our sixth graders across the board to go to centric kid.

Because number one, Centricid is such a great camp. And number two, because it is a lot better for them to be the oldest kid at camp than the youngest kid at camp. Yeah. Right? Because it's two hours away from home, not two states away from home. Right. You know, and it is a lot better for them to be the oldest kid there. That way, if they're a little immature, they're still right in the target area. Okay. If you send a sixth grader to student camp who's a little immature, it's going to be too much. You know, not in a bad way, but just it just too much. And so camp was camp. And that's the best thing about it, probably. Yeah. I think the one thing that was utterly disappointing to me this year, man. I know what you're going to say. Say it. There was no school pizza. There was no school pizza.

Okay, so when I was in Nebraska, I'd always see these weird posts about Chip talking about the school pizza. Now it makes sense.

Man, Lake Yale. And this again, this is not a centric problem. This is a Lake Yale conference center problem. But I still love Lake Yale. But every year they do a pizza day where they make the old school rectangle pizza from like cafeteria days. It tastes like the 90s.

Exactly like it. Yeah.

It is uncanny.

Oh, exactly. So I have a quick question talking about uh Lake Yale. Yes. Okay. So do is Centric Kid a program and they always use this one location, or does or does Centricid like travel around the U.S.? Because I literally am oblivious to what they travel. They do. They travel. So they were, and this wasn't the only group that they have because they have camps going on all over. But this specific group of Centricid staffers who were at Lake Yale with us, that was actually their second week at Lake Yale. Okay. So they do two weeks in a row at Lake Yale. And then I think I heard one of the staffers say from there they were going to be down in southeastern. Oh think they were spending three weeks there. Eckard. Eckard. Eckard. Okay.

Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And they would be there for three weeks. But simultaneously.

They were because I was asking them. They were going to Norman Park, where which was where the other location where we used to go to a Century Kid camp. That's the other one that's close to us. Okay.

How long have you been going to Century Kid for? How long has that been like the kids' summer camp?

SPEAKER_01 6:10

I've been going to Century Kid since before I was at the orchard.

SPEAKER_02 6:13

Okay. So a long time.

SPEAKER_01 6:14

So are you the one that kind of brought Century Kid to No, the Orchard was actually already going to um Centricid. Very cool.

SPEAKER_02 6:20

I think what they had to take one year off or two years off from COVID?

SPEAKER_01 6:24

Maybe one. And then there was one year where we went to another kid's camp. We went to Camp Kid Jam? Yes. Camp Kid Jam. Because that was the orange kids' camp. Like the orange curriculum that we use. And it was a good camp. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite pictures of had and came from that kid's camp because I asked, I don't know if you don't know if Jax is old enough yet, but you know, the so-and-so show, which is like you know, so I I know because I help with the curriculum at the old church. Yeah. Okay. So one of the guys, you remember which which guy? John or Brandon. Brandon. Brandon off of the so-and-so show. Like those guys were at camp. We were leaving camp that year and stopped at a Zaxby's right before I-75 to come back to the church. And we're inside, and Brandon comes inside to eat Zaxby's. And this man has been at camp like he's exhausted. He's tired. He's exhausted. Must it be incognito in the Zaxby's. And yeah, he embraced every bit of it. He invited the kids to come sit at his table. So I got a picture of Haddon sitting at the city. That's really cool. That's really cool. Yeah. You know, eating their Zaxby's, you know. And so that was a great memory. Nothing wrong with Camp Kid Jam. But man, you just can't beat Centricid. It is just, it is a great experience. I would say this, and this is probably, you know, not what we planned on talking about when we talk about camp, but I think it's an important conversation. The only issue with camp is how expensive it is. Okay. Yeah. Like camp is crazy expensive. The cost to each kid who went to camp was $325, Merbeth. That they pay. They pay.

Yeah. What most people don't know unless you pay attention, because we mention every now and then, is that the church pays almost that much for each kid that goes to camp.

That's just how expensive it is.

And that's not a, hey, we took up a special offering for this. That is a we budget every year to help offset the camp cost. And when you think about it, that cost is kind of what you'd expect for a vacation, right? It's like, you know, right around a hundred bucks a day for the kids that are going to camp. And three meals, lodging, activities, full staff, you know, like it the cost is in line with how much stuff costs. Yeah. It's just so expensive. And, you know, I I just want to say shout out to the church because that's like a priority line in our year where we do that because I know, I know, I know that camp is expensive. Yeah. Especially if you're sending more than one kid to camp. It's expensive.

Beverett's had three going this year.

Yeah, so it's expensive. It's real expensive. Yeah. But it's even more expensive than you realize. Yeah. But that's how valuable we think that the experience can be.

I would I would say to sending three this year as opposed to, you know, being used to the last what five years only sending one, it's worth it. It really is. Yeah.

It's worth it. Would would you say, Mary Beth, that you think that maybe some of the reason we haven't seen as big a groups go to camp the last few years is because that cost just keeps cutting.

SPEAKER_02 9:32

Oh yeah. Yeah, I would say so. I've just since I've been the one in charge of booking and planning camp, I've seen the costs rise probably by at least $100 per kid, at least $100 per kid over the last couple of years.

SPEAKER_01 9:44

Yeah. And so we try to offset that with like scholarships that are available to kids. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 9:48

Oh no, not what not what we charge, like what the camp charges. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What Centricid charges. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 9:54

Yeah. I got I got you. I got you. Yeah. What Centric changes. We've kept it pretty We've kept the cost fairly in line with that $300 mark is kind of where we try to keep it in line with. Yeah. But you know, I know that there's scholarships and stuff that help with families going to camp. But I think a lot of what we've seen is people are like, well, I would rather just not go than ask for scholarship money for my kid to go to camp. I hate that, but that's just the reality of it and everything. And so, you know, it it is a struggle. And we are, as a church, looking at more and more ways to keep camp affordable for your kids. But if I could say this to parents who were listening to this, 300, and it was 325 this year, $325 is a drop in the bucket when you look at your kids' extracurricular activities.

100%. Yeah. I mean, it just is. And just the impact that week's going to have on shaping your child and like pointing them to Jesus.

To me, it's like they're that's it's just a matter of priorities. Yeah. You know, and and that is not a shot, taking a shot at anybody. Like my kids do extracurricular stuff. We pay for Haddon to work out with a trainer every month because that's what he does. And Chasen's big into golf now. We've done the baseball thing, we've done the soccer thing, we did the golf camp thing, you know. Yeah. So like I get it, but I want to encourage parents, don't let church camp be the one extra thing that's like that step too far.

You know, because the truth is your kids have all of the other extracurriculars going on all year. This is the one week a year where they get this.

And the reason that I'm saying it now that we're back from church camp is because before you know it, it's gonna be time to start putting in deposits for next year.

Oh, yeah. It'll be here before we know it. Yeah. All right. So I have a question. So what would you say thinking through the whole week? You know, obviously we talked about the low for you, chip was the the pizza, and I'm very sorry about that.

SPEAKER_01 11:43

Questionable low.

I'm sorry. Well, let's think of some highs, some positives. What are some positives of the week that you saw? Whether it was with uh I can't think of any because they didn't have pizza. No, excuse me.

Just ruined your entire week.

Let Mary Beth go first because I I got I got a couple, and to be honest, one of them is not so serious, but it's definitely a memory. Say that.

So one of my highs from camp every year is watching and just being in the room while these kids worship. Yeah. Just about every time there's a point where I get teary-eyed. Yeah. And like I can't sing anymore. Yeah. And I just need to listen to them. Yeah. It's just really cool. Yeah. It's really cool to watch them.

Yeah. It was. I I paused a couple of times. Yeah. Just not singing to listen to the seating.

To watch, just take it in. Yeah.

Well, honestly, just because there were a few, they rotate the seating char around. There were a few times and then we were up on the front row. Yeah.

Oh, they rotate this. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.

So so you're just, well, I just close my eyes and listen. Yeah. You know, just because you're listening to the kids sing. Yeah. And the craziest thing to me is, and it's cool, I've been around these kids. Most of these kids can't carry a note in a bucket. Right. And I I say that as one who identifies, you know. Same. And yet when they're all singing, it sounds incredible. It does. Like the the voice of these children, just it sounds incredible. So it does. Absolutely. That's one of my favorite parts. Yeah. I love that. Yeah. So I've got a not so serious favorite moment, but it was hilarious. So Chasen has recently like re-gotten into Pokemon cards. Okay. The only thing that has changed is that I've gotten into Pokemon cards with now. And it's really because, you know, I'm trying to look at things to do with the boys. Yeah. But where Pokemon cards have got me is it has taken my like 90s love of sports cards that I'm currently in the process of going through like 12,000 cards that I had as a kid. And it and it's, you know, part of part of that I'm finding is fun because it kind of lets me just turn my brain off and like do something like that. The other part is I'm addicted to Facebook Marketplace. And so now it's like now you're bargain hunting and looking for treasures while you so it's kind of like this weird combination that just happens to be Pokemon cards. And so a bunch of the other boys in the dorm that I was staying in were Pokemon card guys. Carter being one of them was one of them. I actually, Lucas's son, Leo, who was one of them. And so there was one night, like they legit are like trading Pokemon cards in there because Carter brought his whole collection.

Everything. Did you know he was bringing his card? He told me. Okay. So I was like, that's on you. If you leave them or lose them, I'm not replacing them.

And Chasen had a pack and Liam had a pack and they were open and swapping those things. I love that. And so I've always kind of this is the Facebook marketplace side of me, is told Chasen, hey, send me some cards that you want that you like because it gives me something to kind of watch out for on Facebook market. This is the bargain hunter flea market side, right? And so I'd found some that he had been looking for that were pretty cheap. And it was a guy in Gainesville. And so I'd brought Chasen in and was like, hey, come here real quick, look at these cards. Are these the ones you know that you like? And he was like, Yes, he's looking at my phone, flipping through them. Well, the next day we're leaving to come home from camp and driving home, haven't quite made it to the interstate yet. I get a message from a guy who was like, Yeah, I'll do that. Do you want to meet? And I was like, say what? Excuse me. So while Chase was looking at my phone, he like made an offer. I don't know.

I didn't know Jason was the one who made the offer.

He was wheeling and dealing. Absolutely backed up. I think that's a little bit exaggerated. The message I got was not the do you want to meet? It was at breakfast that morning. I remember it was a breaks that morning where he said, Yeah, I'll do that. And I was like, wait, what? You know, and show Chase. And so Chasen had spent 15 bucks at like bought these three Pokemon cards. And so on the way home from camp, we pull off at Gainesville and a guy meets us to not in the bus.

Chip drove separate. Did not make the bus pullover to Gamesville. Although there was a group of girls from Brantford who were trying their hardest at breakfast on the last day to convince Chip to tell the bus to stop so they could buy squishies.

Oh my god. If I never hear squishy or neito again, I'll be fine. What's a neat o? I don't even know.

They're like the little squishies. I think they're supposed to be a stress ball thing, but it's become a like kid sought-after toy. I was reading something where they said that like if it has a certain smell, you're supposed to like throw it away. Yeah.

What if you can't smell?

You know. Oh, that's sad shit.

I'm colorblind and I don't have a great sense of smell. Really? Yeah.

Well, I'm missing out on so much in the world. One day in heaven, it'll all be healed.

That's why you do so well in the boys' cabin.

Mary Beth had to come in the boys' dorm to look for something of Carter's one day after it was cleared out. She walks in within 15 seconds. She goes, Wow, it smells way worse than here.

It did. It smelled like, okay, so you eat. See your drums to make sure like they like, you know, got showered, got in bed, stuff like that, or you just kind of just I mean, if you want to stay in my job, that's fine.

Yeah. Hopefully you're you're suggesting this. Like, please take a server.

It was that what we the importance of having those counselors is to stay with the kids, you know, with the dorms and everything like that. And and I always stay on the little kids' side of the dorm because, you know, they're the ones that, hey, I don't know how to make my bed, you know, or those like that. So it was fun. I I will say, on a serious note, highlight the sheriff camp. Shout out my guy Eli. Okay. So Eli's intern here at the church does a great job. This is the second year going to kids' camp with us, does a great job. And there was one kid in our group that he just consistently had gospel conversations with all week because he knew he was close. It was he was an older kid. And so just consistently all week had gospel conversations. And then the last night at camp led him to trust Jesus as a savior. And and so that was really cool to watch because Eli was, you know, hey, let's go talk to him. And finally, that last night, I was like, buddy, you just go talk to him. Yeah. You can do this. He's probably gonna talk to you more than he's gonna talk to you. I'm there too.

And so he went and he was able to lead him to the Lord. And, you know, that was that was really cool, not just from the perspective that we saw this kid trust Christ, but just from my perspective, I'm watching Eli like make that consistent, yeah, 15, 20 minute investment every day to have that conversation. Yeah. And that that was that was really cool to see. Yeah.

Oh man. Well, sounds like camp was a hit. So all the parents jump on it when they have the camp deposits because it sounds like it's gonna be another great year next year. Yep. It's one of my favorite weeks. Yeah, that's awesome. Well, would love to kind of, we have still some time left to talk about the sermon from yesterday. So yesterday was week three of our sermon series, Louder Than Words, and it was on Blessed Assurance. And let me tell you, I, Mary Beth, you will probably agree. We grew up in the Presbyterian church. Hearing that song yesterday being sung just brought me back to like my childhood. But I love that, you know, all those hymns, I think as a kid we took for granted, didn't realize, you know, we sing these songs all the time. But like now that we are born again, fully believe in Jesus and what he's done, those songs mean so much more, especially that song. I remember like vividly seeing that as a kid. You do? Yeah. Do you remember seeing it? No, you don't remember the hymn book?

Were you serving in kids' church?

I was not. No, I was an acolyte.

I don't know what that means. It sounds like a superhero if I'm being honest with you.

Is this the whole like what you were upset about at the hate?

Different different no, that was the lighting of the advent tandem. This an acolyte was a big deal. So you had to go through like the training and everything.

I mean, basically she was a robe. Yeah, you wore a white robe.

So basically, you were a superhero.

I mean, you did bring the light into the church, so you were kind of a big deal. That's hilarious. I I'm immediately flashing bag to ask me like, and I never got to light the advent candles podcast airs. Oh, maybe I did.

Maybe I did. My sister fact checked. Yeah, you blocked that out like I blocked out from the hymn book. Okay, you obviously, Chip, remember this song. I do. So did it um obvious, you know, through your research this week, did you have like an aha moment thinking back to singing that song to now?

Well, I think I've always been a deep theological thinker, and so I have always no. Yeah, I mean, honestly, this is one of those songs that you do remember and that you do remember fondly singing. It's a it's a great song, you know, it's a powerful song. But I think the shift, maybe the the tweak is that when you realize that the blessed assurance isn't, hey, I have this hope, but it's I have this hope in Jesus. It's Jesus' faithfulness that is my assurance, not I'm faithful that is my assurance. And I just think that small shift in thinking does maybe color the song a little bit differently. Yeah. You know? And so yeah, it was, it was, it was good to kind of look back on that.

Yeah. Well, I even think too, hearing the history, you know, I didn't know Franny Crosby, you know, sang that or created that song, let alone her story of being blind at six weeks old. And then the phrase that she used that how she wouldn't change it because she wants the first face she ever sees to be Jesus'. Like when you said that in the service, it just hit me like, man. How wild is that? Yeah. Like that's prof that's powerful. Like the fact that like she wouldn't change her life for anything, and the fact that because of the blindness, she was able to write these songs with such confidence of what heaven's gonna be. Like, man, I think that's what hit me the most in it is this assurance in who Jesus is, what he's done, and the fact is that yes, this world is terrible and hard, but like the blessed assurance of getting to be with Jesus and like man.

And that's the legacy she had. And I think that that's pretty incredible. When did she write that song? So, because I know this off the top of my head and do not have the Wikipedia page pulled up directly in front of me. Fandy Crosby wrote Blessed Assurance in 1873.

That that may be my favorite Fanny Crosby song. He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock and covers me there with his hand. It's an allusion to when Moses was on the mountain and God hid him in the cleft of the rock and covered him while his glory passed in front of him. Anyway, more like Jesus. That title sounds familiar. All right, hold on. We got this one. This one 100%. Near the cross. Near the cross. Near the cross. Pass me not, O gentle savior. Great.

So in Mayo, we had a blue hymnal, a red hymnal, and a yellow hymnal. We just had a blue hymnal. And we just called them, all right, get the blue book, get the red book, get the yellow book. All right. So yesterday the scripture reference was Hebrews 10, 19 through to 23. And you mentioned that in order to understand that text, you had to go back and understand the Old Testament. So I'd love to kind of like lean into the Old Testament reference that Hebrews 10, 19 to 23 has.

Yeah. So, well, first of all, I think like big picture, when you read Hebrews, like if you're not aware of a lot of stuff from the Old Testament, you're going to miss most of what's going on in Hebrews. And then also that's not just true of Hebrews. That's true of a ton of the New Testament. Okay. And so I think for me, like that is why our last series was so important. Storyline is just kind of understanding like this all goes together. This all fits together. Like there have been multiple times in church history where different people have tried to separate the Old Testament and the New Testament. Like these are two different gods. These are two different, you know. And it's just not true. Yeah. You know, they build, there's a progressive revelation that is happening in here. And so you need to understand that. And I think when we talked about in the storyline series, the idea of shadows in the Old Testament. Yeah. This is a perfect example in Hebrews, right? Because in Hebrews 10, 19 through 23, we're given a fuller explanation of the shadow that was the Holy of Holies. Yeah. Right. So the Holy of Holies, you know, if you weren't there Sunday, was the center point of the tabernacle and the temple in the Old Testament. And if you ever get those confused, the temple was like a palace, the tabernacle was like a tent. Right. Same place, just one was permanent. And in the center, the Holy of Holies, that's where God's presence would tangibly live among the people. And when the author of Hebrews says in Hebrews chapter 10 that we have boldness to enter the sanctuary, that's the idea that that's the reference that he's making. And he even talks about that we are able to enter it through a new and living way that Jesus has inaugurated through the curtain. Yeah. Right. And that is a clear illustration of the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies, God's presence from the rest of the temple, the rest of the tabernacle, really from his people. And then he says that he we entered in through the curtain, through his flesh. And that's even an allusion, right? To that when Jesus died on the cross, that curtain was torn from top to bottom, which is, you know, it's symbolic in itself that it's from top to bottom. God himself doing this, but also it's symbolic of the curtain was torn because the flesh of Jesus was torn. And so there's just all these layers that are in there that build off of it when you understand what has come before. Yeah. Right. And so I think the best way to make sure you don't miss any of that. And I said this Sunday in Lake City, get a good study Bible. Yeah. For my money, still, I don't know of a better one than the ESV study Bible. Yeah. That's not the translation we preach out of on Sundays. It's a really, really good translation. Love the translation. The study Bible, just the notes, uh, the the comprehensive nature of it, it's it's spot on. And I would say that I know that Prime Days are coming up as of the date of this recording. I don't know when they are, but I've been told they're coming up. There you go. And 100% it'll be on sale. Okay.

Yeah, I think I got mine during Prime Days one year and I spent like 20 bucks on it. Oh, yeah. And it's hardback and it is thick. Yeah. It's not a it's not a tote-around Bible. It's one you keep at home. It's not.

It's not. And because of that, I would recommend don't spend the money to get like the leather bound that you're going to carry to church. Like the one I have. It's a hardback. You pick up the hardback about 20 bucks.

And then, you know, I keep shouting it out because I just really keep seeing it everywhere is the Bible recap, right? So that's a podcast that started Oh, two years ago.

I mean, I started. Yes. So before the video aspect of it, it was just on podcast. I didn't know there was a video accident. I was there. So it was on the podcast first. And to be honest, I had a hard time keeping up with that one because then I would get off track and it wouldn't like the day wouldn't line up to what day it actually was. Does that make sense? Okay.

And so then it was 365. Yes.

There's a new one dropped every single day. But the Bible app, which I think is you can get it on Apple phones and Android phones. I don't I think you can get it on both. But the Bible app. I don't like them. But the Bible app has it now. And there's a video that goes along with the day by day. And the Bible app is really good at like if you miss a day, you can easily see like what you missed and how to catch up.

Yes. And I recently saw, I don't know if this is new and they're gonna do each book this way, but there was one that I completed a few months ago. Okay. It was just the book of Proverbs. Oh, very cool. And it was like 30 days, I think, but highly recommended. 31 days, I would bet. Probably. You're right. I didn't even think about that. Probably 31 days, but I recommend that highly. It is very informative. Okay.

And I think what keeps it on my mind is I was in Walmart the other day and they have the Bible recap study guide, like a book, a physical book printed. And so not that it's like so much better than any other whatever that's out there. It's just so available. Yes. And it's so easy to access. That is a really good one. And you can also, you know, if you're willing to do a little bit more, like don't be afraid to buy commentaries if you're studying, particularly like a book of the Bible. Buy a commentary on this book of the Bible. My little nerd heart would be more than happy to recommend a good commentary on a book of the Bible if you, you know, throw me an email. Or you can buy a one volume commentary on the whole Bible. Like so there's just so many ways that you can do that. And if you are not familiar with the Old Testament, with the story of Scripture, you're just gonna miss it if you're just reading the text. And that sounds horrible, right? Because it's not just the text. Those are the inspired words of God that are effective in your life to make you more like Jesus. And yet, why would we not avail ourselves of all the tools and all the information that we have to just get more from it, to learn more from it?

Yeah, two more things I want to say about the Bible recap on the Bible app on our phones that came to mind while you were talking is the Bible recap through the Bible app also has added into it, woven into it. I don't know. I'm still really tired. It's all good. Has each time you start a new book of the Bible, is it the gospel project that has like the little drawings where it's explaining?

I know Shamel, it is not the gospel project. That's a life weight curriculum. I think it's the Bible project.

The Bible project where those videos are good. They're good. They explain so much.

I haven't I haven't seen it in person, but I don't think the whole Bible project for kids is on the Bible app yet, but at least a portion of it is cool. Okay. Where they have like a kids' version. So the videos are more directed towards kids than adults. Okay. But it still goes through all of scripture.
